Nga Mihi Nui

National wants to restore English as the common language used in government communications. All departments will be required to English names as the primary name - except those entities specifically related to Māori.

For example, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will become NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

It remains to be seen whether the use of Kia Ora and Nga Mihi Nui in communications will become less common, given government and council employees should not be pressured or expected to do so.

The transition to plain English vindicates the decision of the Kaipara District Council to use English only in their annual reports – a decision that came under fire from activists.
