In February, Green Party co-leader, Chloe Swarbrick, committed her party to “getting more Green-aligned people into local government positions next year”. It is making good on that promise in Whangarei.
Letterbox understands the Green Party has shoulder-tapped a high-profile candidate to contest the Whangarei mayoralty, and work has begun to build their profile.
Gaining the mayoralty would
significantly strengthen the position of the “Green-aligned” members on the
Whangarei council. In previous elections, candidates have downplayed their Green
Party affiliations, and they will likely do so again next year. Letterbox will
be exposing those candidates.
Two other candidates are believed
to have committed to challenging the incumbent, Vince Cocurullo, for the
mayoralty.
