Investigating Covid - Have your say

New Zealand’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic is being reviewed, presumably so lessons can be learned to better prepare for the next pandemic.

The review was initiated by the Labour government but has been criticised for being too narrowly focused. The coalition agreement between National and NZ First addressed that concern by expanding the terms of the inquiry.  The public is now being asked to have a say on what the terms of reference should be.

An issue hardly talked about in the mainstream media is the research by Dr John Gibson from Waikato University which concludes “excess” deaths post-Covid are about four percent higher than expected. He says accurate health and economic data are needed to evaluate policy responses to the pandemic. Surely, having a foundation of reliable data is fundamental to an inquiry if it is to produce worthwhile recommendations. If there are excess deaths, then the inquiry has some questions to answer.

Is the Covid infection causing excess deaths, or is it the vaccine as some claim? Or is it some other reason? Did the Government’s response to the pandemic contribute to excess deaths?

Why was the Ministry of Health’s Pandemic Plan used in the 2009 swine flu pandemic abandoned? Was the Ministry of Health’s response dictated by politicians?

What impact did the lockdowns have on medical treatment, and in particular the effect of delays to treatment for patients with serious health conditions?

Did the government’s restructuring of the District Health Boards in the middle of the pandemic negatively impact patient care?

Were patients adequately informed about the potential side effects of the vaccine?

Should general practitioners have had a greater role in roll-out of the vaccination program?

Should doctors have been permitted to use alternative Covid treatments and preventative remedies?

Do the terms of the Pfizer purchase agreement prevent other remedies from being recommended by the Ministry of Health? And why hasn’t the Pfizer purchase agreement been released?

The deadline for submissions is 24 March.
