Crime: The good news and the bad news

GOOD NEWS & BAD NEWS

It's good news from Labour – we have reduced the prison population by 21%!

And it's bad news from National - violent crime is up 33%!

“In the 2017 election campaign the party pledged to reduce the overall prison population by 30% within 15 years, and the then-Corrections spokesperson Kelvin Davis… announced a national strategy to lower the Māori prison population in line with the general population.” (1News, 7 July 2023)

The effect is that there are now approximately 2500 criminals out in the community or on home detention that would otherwise have been in prison.

Does one even need to ask why crime is now a problem?
